Incredible Performance in Public Health
Published on: 31 July 2024
He knew that an intervention at the stage of pregnancy led to all kinds of positive impacts such as reduction in morbidity and maternal mortality rates. For children, the benefits were equally profound, with lower rates of low birth weight, congenital anomalies, and infantile anaemia.
The CIP methodology had him come up a goal statement that was unambiguous, measurable, time bound and audacious.
With the guidance of his Coach, he decided to focus on raising the haemoglobin levels of anaemic pregnant women by 2 points in a period of three months.
Ordinarily, achieving this feat for 1000 women in three months would be considered practical. But Dr. Bose dared to dream bigger, setting an incredible goal of 4000 or more women. In his district based on government data, over 60% pregnant women were anaemic.
With unwavering determination and a clear vision, Dr. Bose drove head first into action. He knew that every anaemic woman needed support and guidance, so he ensured that each one was “adopted” by a dedicated field-level functionary. Iron folic acid supplements and nutrition support became the norm, paving the way for healthier pregnancies and brighter futures.
Through the lens of the Causing Incredible Performance framework, Dr. Bose embraced a new approach to achieving his goals. He meticulously planned each step, identifying obstacles and devising strategies to overcome them. Regular tracking and review became second nature, ensuring progress never faltered.
Across 16 administrative blocks, he got 12307 pregnant women listed. He set up a system for monthly testing to track the progress.
At the end of first month, 67% pregnant women showed an increase of 1gm% in HB estimation.
During the first two months of the CIP project, about 2400 anaemic had improved their haemoglobin levels by at least 2 gm%. And ASHA workers had gone on a strike! And nobody seem to know when the strike will end – the adoption strategy that worked well till now was in jeopardy. At this juncture, Dr Bose was very sure that he cannot achieve his incredible goal! He was distraught by this thought!
His Coach got Dr Bose to attend to various details: the numbers of pregnant women at various levels of anaemia who still needed to increase their HB levels by at least 2 gm%, the number ‘adopters’ required, who all can be these adopters, supplies of iron folic tablets and nutrition supplements, the ways to reach these to the pregnant women etc. When these details were worked out, Dr Bose became confident that he can achieve his incredible goal.
By taking the actions coming out of attending to these details, 6235 pregnant women had increased their HB levels by 2 gm% – a feat six times greater than the normal goal. What more, 3405 had increased their HB levels to 11 gm% or more, the HB level that is normal!
An Impactful Result
As joy and fulfilment permeated the air, Dr. Bose remained steadfast in his commitment to continue the journey. With the lessons learned from the CIP program guiding his path, he forged ahead, empowered to create lasting change in the lives of those he served.
